Guest Room Update and a Spring Break Recap

I always underestimate the amount of time it takes to paint a room!  I tend to conveniently forget how much time it takes to spackle holes, sand rough places, touch up and/or tape off trim… you know — the prep work.  Ugh.

And let’s just say that prepping what was a formerly teenage space for painting is no picnic.  I won’t get into details, but let’s just say evidence of pocket knife abuse was discovered, along with an overloaded wall shelf that took off some of the dry wall when we finally wrestled it off the wall.  Whew.

BUT — I persevered!  These are pics I took before any final touch up occurred, but daylight was dwindling and I knew I wanted some accurate photos of the color for you…

I have no idea what that little speck is — something on my camera lens!

You can see the before pics here.

The color is Behr’s Belvedere Cream, the same color I used in my kitchen.

This color looks different in different lighting, but I love it as a creamy neutral with gray/green undertones.  Amazing how it brightened up the room.  When I finished it looked very creamy, but an hour later it was looking like a very pale green.  You can see it looks slightly different in each of the photos, too.  Love it!

Plus, don’t you just love a freshly painted room?

Except… I noticed how filthy those windows are, how badly all the doors need repainting, and now have the bug to paint my upstairs hallway and rip up the carpet.  Just sayin’– the mind just goes when you’ve got one room all freshened up.

Next up, I’ll be working on the twin beds.  I’m planning a white wash treatment on them.

They’re great, sturdy beds, but the honey pine finish has got to go.  I considered slipcovering the head boards but I’d still have to come up with a treatment for the side rails and foot boards, so I think I’ll just give them all a nice creamy white wash finish.  Imperfect, of course.

Here’s an inspiration photo for you…

The king size mattress got wrestled down the stairs, out the front door, down the hill of our backyard, and into our basement.  I’ve had a houseful of teens all week, so thought I’d put them to work.  Then I had to feed them.  🙂

I’m so sad my Spring Break is coming to an end… makes me long for summer when I can tackle more big projects, not get out of bed while it’s dark out, read some books, and get my project and home pages updated here for you!  Anyhoo, I’ve enjoyed the break, got a room painted, an armoire finished up, a little cleaning and sorting done, exercised every day (woo hoo!), made some headway on my book club book, and caught up on some long overdue phone conversations.

This morning I’m overhauling my booth and adding in that sweet little armoire — can’t wait to share pics!  Then I’ll be making an art supply run for the preschool, getting a quick mani/pedi, and then the hubs and I have a wedding to attend tonight.

Tomorrow marks one year since my niece Kaely was killed by a drunk driver.

I can’t believe a whole year has passed since that awful day.  We speak of her often, enjoy YouTube videos and Facebook photos of her together, but her passing has left a hole in our hearts.  I’m so immensely proud of my children and how they’ve mourned her and honored her over the past year.  And I’m in awe of the strength of my Florida family that continues the fight against drunk driving with regular walks and fundraising in her memory.  Today a street in Miami will be renamed for her.

If you think of it, I would be so humbled if you’d stop and say a prayer for that beautiful girl and our family.

Blessings to you all and please… don’t drink and drive.

  1. Wow, I cannot believe it has been a year since your the accident. I feel like I just read about it yesterday. That is such a heartbreaking tragedy. Prayers and strength to you and your family. And yes, paint prep stinks. Looking good though. Cannot wait to see it come together :). I will live vicariously through you while nursing and trying to find my sanity ;).

  2. how special that they are naming a street for her… i think of you and her often. and thought of it intensely when laura lost her niece recently in an accident. i don’t know why these things happen, but i am sure when i meet my maker i will find out. personally, i like to think that the ones who are taken so young have bigger roles to fulfill and they were too special to be on earth with the rest of us.
love the inspiration for the room!

  3. Hard to believe that time keeps going by like that after you lose someone you love. Thinking of you guys today!

  4. I am glad the sadness of the anniversary is tempered with the joy of a wedding. And the guest bedroom will be welcoming for guests, especially ones from Florida.

    Bliss

  5. I am so sorry for you and your families loss. She is very pertty and now in the Arms of Jesus.

I just wish laws were set so we can get them off the streets. But in our state we even have had police officiers driving drunk, political figures , etc. the list goes on. Just am not sure what is going to turn this matter around. Just have to keep praying for changes in the hearts of those that choose addiction to med their pain.

I saw a picture of the street name earlier and immediately said a prayer for you all. What a nice honor. God bless.
