Antiqued Mirror Upcycled Window

Happy Monday, friends!  I have my boy home safely from Spain and Portugal and all is right in my world today. 🙂  I’m sure he’ll sleep until noon for the next few days, but I’m happy to let him.

What an amazing experience he had!!  Here are a couple of snippets — 366 photos taken (by him), discovery of Spanish coffee, chocolate, and fresh seafood, head and heart full of devotionals and prayers, a new-found appreciation for architecture, and a God Moment as he experienced the Stations of the Cross at Fatima, Portugal.  Nothing short of incredible.

If he gives me permission I’ll share some of his photos here for you all — they will take your breath away.

Today I’m at-long-last sharing a fun window project I hinted at a couple of weeks ago…

This took longer than I’d hoped, as is everything paint-related with all the rain we’ve had this summer!  But I was on a mission to achieve an antiqued mirror look using this old window I scored for free…

Ugh.  How to turn this frog into a prince?

But you can see from this photo above, that my impatience had already gotten the best of me.

I found through Pinterest several tutorials on how to achieve an antiqued mirror look using Krylon Looking Glass spray paint and a mixture of vinegar and water.  They all followed the same process — mist the window with the water/vinegar and then apply a coat of the Looking Glass spray paint.  Allow to dry and repeat.  Allow to dry and repeat.

Now, in my defense, the back side of the window was easy to clean up, so I used a little Krud Krutter and some elbow grease and I was good to paint away.  So I did.

The front of the window??  Well, you see it.  Nasty.  With lots of this…

This was by the far the most time consuming part of the project.  Lots of scraping and de-gooping.  Over and over.  For each of the nine panes.

The left pane is clean and de-gooped.  The right one next in line.  But at least in this photo, you can see the mottled mirror effect!  Love!

I contemplated leaving it just like this…

But my summer obsession with aqua blues got the best of me.  If you follow me on Instagram and Facebook, you know of what I speak…

Enter Annie Sloan Provence…

I love this color.

And now, it’s ready for a new home… it would be so cute on a screened porch or patio, or propped up on a mantel.  I did attach hanging hardware to the back that can support the weight.

Sorry for the glare in the photo, lots of lights in and around my booth.

Now, full disclosure.  I am pleased with the antiqued look.  But not thrilled.  It’s missing a bit of the gold tones I find so warm and appealing in true antique mirrors.  So don’t be surprised if I try out another technique (and there are others!) on another window.  I have seven more to play with. 🙂

Enjoy your day!  I’ll be spending mine with my boy… 🙂
