Shopping on Saturday…

Yes, one of the things I love about January is that it’s much easier for me to find time to shop.  You know, prowl around a little, scope and dig for a deal… that kind of shopping.  Not the sprint-into-Target-with-your-milelong-list-and-only-20-minutes kind of shopping.

Last weekend, I stopped into Queen of Hearts Antiques (Marietta) and Old Time Pottery.  And I hit the jackpot for under $35 TOTAL.

Remember my hotel silver piece I mentioned here?  It’s this bowl you see on the right.  Can’t wait to polish it up just a bit.  I’m pretty sure it’s an ice cream bowl.

I did a little research, and the Edgewater Beach Hotel is one of those old Chicago hotels.  One of the things I enjoy about hotel silver is discovering its provenance.   This is a fun one!  Built in 1916 right on Lake Michigan and was patronized by Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, and Franklin D. Roosevelt, to name a few.  Maybe one of these cultural icons enjoyed ice cream out of this very bowl!!  Cool to think about, anyway. 🙂

The candlesticks were love at first sight.  I was totally sold when I saw this…

See the stamp “Made in Occupied Japan?”  How awesome is that?  These were crafted between 1945 and 1952.  60 year old pieces of silver just speak to me.  Especially when you know there can only be so many of them out there. I won’t be polishing the candlesticks just yet; the tarnish has settled into the grooves beautifully and they have the perfect amount of shine.  All three pieces (the bowl and both candlesticks) are heavy, heavy silverplate or nickel silver.  If you can’t have sterling, this is the next best (and more affordable) thing.

Did you catch the fabric in the first photo?

The most lovely stripes of celedon, khaki, cream, and soft blue.  Perfect to recover the seat of a chair in my family room!  One yard for $4.99 at Old Time Pottery.  Did you know they carry fabric remnants?

I also scored this at Old Time Pottery…

The perfect geometric mossy green lampshade for my family room floor lamp!  $11.99 originally, but ended up on a 50% off shelf.  Sa-weet!

Here she is in place.  I love the punch she adds!  An extremely lucrative shopping excursion — and a fun one, too. 🙂  I have one more score from OTP and one from my local Goodwill, but those are being “worked over.”  I’ll share soon!

I posted about collections in decor over at Fancy Little Things yesterday.  Check it out for some display inspiration for your own collections!

  2. That fabric is so beautiful! Serene and just a lovely color combo. I have to say I am jealous. One income and two little ones means my bank account is low and my time to browse is non-existant!!

  3. Hi! What awesome finds, thanks for sharing.
