The Mom Cave {Sneak Peek}

Oh, my gosh, I thought I would never finish the paint job in the Mom Cave, but it’s D.O.N.E.  I didn’t think through this very well and ended up doing a lot more cutting in than I needed to, but… we’re movin’ on and putting the furniture back in place!

Here was the purplicious-ness herself before:

I love this shade of purple, but it was time for a change.  I have to admit, when I started covering it up, I felt a few twinges of what am I doing? I love this color regret.   Here are some in progress peeks…

That’s where I had to repair the wall. 🙂  Fun.

I chose Behr’s Silver Sateen as my gray (who knew there were so many shades of gray out there?) to go on the wall and trim above the chair rail.  The picture moldings above the chair rail were part of what was bugging me before.  At Elizabeth’s suggestion, I decided to paint them the same color as the wall so they’d still be visible and interesting but wouldn’t be quite so busy.  By the way, the Behr paint I used was the paint and primer in one and let me tell you — this stuff covers.  What you’re looking at is one coat of the gray over the purple.  The room only took two coats, with a third pass on the corners.  Amazing.

Below the chair rail, I went with the trim color that is prevalent throughout my downstairs, Porter’s Velvet White.  I love it because it’s not a bright white, but it’s not a yellow white.  Just a nice cream and the cream and gray palette is what I wanted in this space.  What I didn’t factor in was that all of the crown molding and the chair rail were a bright white (painted by the previous owners some 13+ years ago).  When I started in with the Velvet White, the difference was painfully obvious.  So I ended up repainting all of the molding (except for the upper picture moldings) in Velvet White.  Pain in the tushie, but I’m so glad I did. 🙂

The upper picture moldings I painted in Silver Sateen semi-gloss.  I love the tone-on-tone effect it has with the eggshell finish of the walls!  Cool, calm, collected.  Freshly painted.

Sorry for the glare in the photo– with all the furniture shoved to the center of the room and bright light streaming through the windows, it was hard to get a good picture.  But you get the gist, right?  And that’s all you get for now. 🙂  Still a few projects to do to pull it all together, but I’m loving the new feel of the space!

Now, for a peek at a little thrifty find I scored while garage sale-ing with my friend, Michelle.  Can you say spray paint?

Yep.  $1.50 for the pair.  Look for these to make their grand entrance soon!

  1. Heidi, love the paint color; and the picture frame moldings on the upper wall look great in the same color! Can’t wait to see the lanterns refurbished! Very pretty, so far!

  3. I love the paint color. I have had a red dining room for about 9 years or so and every now and then I get the urge to paint it something totally different. Then I chicken-out! Yours looks beautiful! Thanks for the recent visit!

  5. I really like those lanterns. Kind of jealous. The gray is looking good. Can’t wait to see it all come together.
